CHILD'S HOODED SCARF


Many thanks to Vanessa in NW Washington for testing this pattern.

CHILD SIZE: measured flat approximately:  Scarf portion 24 inches wide, face opening of 7.5 inches

MATERIALS:
Approximately 4 ounces worsted weight yarn  (208 yards)
US I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS:
Fsc = foundation single crochet
Ch = Chain
Dc = Double crochet
Hdc = Half double crochet
Sc = Single Crochet
Fpdc = Front post double crochet
Bpdc = Back post double crochet

GAUGE:  (not important)
12 dc = 4 inches


NOTES:
  1. Read instructions through before beginning.
  2. Hooded scarf in photo was crocheted using Red Heart Super Saver in medium purple.  If you use one of the thinner worsted weight (4) yarns, it will turn out smaller than mine.

HOOD PORTION:

Fsc 22

Row 1:  Ch 2, turn (turning chains do not count as first st here or throughout).  Dc in 21 sts, 2 dc in last st, 3 dc in end of fsc row, 2 dc in next st, dc back along bottoms of 21 fsc. (49 sts)

Row 2:  Ch 2, turn.  Dc in 21 sts, 2 dc in 7 sts, dc in 21 sts. (56 sts)

Row 3:  Ch 2, turn.  Dc in 21 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] 7 times, dc in 21 sts (63 sts)

Row 4:  Ch 2, turn.  Dc in 22 sts, [2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts] 7 times, dc in 20 sts (70 sts)

Row 5:  Ch 2, turn.  Dc in 20 sts, 2 dc in next st, [dc in next 6 sts, 2 dc in next st] 4 times, dc in 21 sts (75 sts)

Rows 6-7:  Ch 2, turn.  Dc in each st. (75 sts)

Rows 8-9:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in 16 sts, hdc in 13 sts, dc in 17 sts, hdc in 13 sts, sc in 16 sts (75 sts)

Row 10:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in 14 sts, hdc in 15 sts, dc in 17 sts, hdc in 15 sts, sc in 14 sts (75 sts)

Row 11:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in 14 sts, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st.  Repeat from * 22 times.  Fpdc once, sc in last 14 sts.  (75 sts)

Row 12:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in 14 sts, *bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st.  Repeat from * 22 times.  Bpdc once, sc in last 14 sts.  (75 sts)

Row 13 (right side):  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in 14 sts, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st.  Repeat from * 22 times.  Fpdc once, sc in last 14 sts.  (75 sts)

Do not fasten off.

SCARF PORTION:

Rows 14-47 (34 rows):  Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a hdc), turn.  Hdc in back loop for 14 sts.  (14 sts)

Fasten off.

Count 14 sts from opposite corner mark st.  Working on the wrong side attach yarn with hdc (counts as first hdc of row 14) in marked st.  

Repeat rows 14-47.  (14 sts)

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

Sorry for being a doofus :) but I love this little hood and have tried other hoods and just can't seem to get them right and your seemed so easy when I read it!! I am actually trying it with rainbow colors!!!

Children vary so much in size I couldn't say. However I gave measurements of each size pattern.

I'm seriously confused I did the fsc then all the way down to the 2 DC in the last stitch if row 1 I don't know what it means by 3 DC in end of row and along bottom idk I am seriously confused lol

The end of the row, how about if we call it the side of the fsc? Then you work along the unused loop of the fsc. Hope that helps.

I'm confused as well. I have dc across for the fsc, to where will the 2dc in the last st, end 3dc at the end of fsc go? There aren't enough stitches for that in the fsc row.

Oone end will be straight and the other curved. Just follow the instructions, one row at a time. Try not to overthink it..

Is the back loops in the first step of the scarf the straight side not the U shape right just go down the line

With worsted weight and an I hook it should have been plenty big for a 2 year old. My guess is you used a thinner yarn. You could always make one with the adult instructions.
