MY APRIL SCARF
I call the stitch used in this scarf the seed stitch, because it makes me think of the knitted seed stitch. Not so much how it looks but the technique. It makes a nice edge, almost scalloped. The ends may be finished with fringe if that’s your preference.
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn 4 ounces
I crochet hook
J crochet hook
Instructions:
With J hook, ch 19.
Row 1: (right side) Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across. Ch 1, turn. (18 sc)
Switch to I hook.
Row 2: Sc in back loop of 1st sc, sc in front loop of next sc. *Sc in back loop of next sc, sc in front loop of next sc, repeat from * across row. Ch 1, turn. (18 sc)
Repeat row 2 for pattern until you reach the length that you want your scarf, ending on wrong side.
Last row: Sc in each sc across row.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Notes:
For wider scarf make starting chain longer, any odd number of chains.
Sample crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver Spring Green.
4 ounces of Red Heart Super Saver makes a scarf 58 inches long. For a longer scarf or to add fringe you will need more yarn.

Note: You may end up with 13 petals, that’s because it is easy to go into the slipstitch. Don’t worry, real flowers usually have an odd number of petals.
CENTER:
Ch 2
Round 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. DO NOT join, but work in continuous rounds. [6 sc]
Round 2: 2 sc in each st. [12 sc]
Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * around. [18 sc]
Round 4: Sc in each st. [18 sc]
Round 5: Sc in first st, sc dec over next 2 st. Repeat around. [12 sc]
Round 6: Sc dec over next 2 st. Repeat around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. [6 sc]
FINISHING:
Insert bottle cap in base. Stuff the bottle cap with Polyfil. Easy way to do this is to roll the Polyfil onto a ball between the palms of your hands. Stuff the flower center with Polyfil. The center should be firm but not hard. Put a line of hot glue around the rim of the bottle cap and on the base of the petals. Quickly press the flower center in place and hold firmly until the glue has cooled. If there are any gaps between the petals and the center, put a little hot glue on a toothpick and reglue the petals and center.
To make a wrist pin cushion cut a strip of elastic to fit comfortably around wrist. Overlap ends by ½ inch and sew. Either sew or hot glue pincushion to elastic.
To make a magnetic pincushion glue a round flat magnet to the bottom of the base. Be careful where you place the magnet as some surfaces are sensitive to magnets, like computerized sewing machines.
