FLOWER MINI PINCUSHION

MATERIALS:
Small amount of worsted weight yarn (green for base and your choice of colors for the “flowers”).
Small amount of Polyfil
Plastic bottle cap from bottle of water or a 24 ounce Pepsi
G (4.5mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle
Hot glue gun
Glue stick

BASE: (base is made the same for all flowers)
Ch 2

Round 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. [6 sc]
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st. Join with a slipstitch in back loop of first sc. [12 sc]
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each st. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. [12 sc]
Round 4-5: Ch 1, sc in each st. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. Fasten off. [12 sc]

ANEMOME PETALS:

From the wrong side join yarn for petals with a slipstitch in any sc of round 5 of base.
Round 1: *Ch 2, 4 dc, ch 2, slipstitch all in same st, slipstitch in next 2 st, repeat from *, ending with slipstitch in one st. (6 petals)

COLLARETTE PETALS:

From the wrong side join yarn for petals with a slipstitch in any sc of round 5 of base.
Round 1: *Ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, slipstitch all in same st, slipstitch in next 2 st, repeat from *, ending with slipstitch in one st. (6 small petals)
Round 2: *Ch 1, slipstich in the unused loops of round 5 of base between next 2 petals, ch 2, 4 dc, ch 2, slipstitch all in same st, repeat from *, ending with slipstitch in first ch 1. (6 large petals)

CACTUS PETALS:

From the wrong side join yarn for petals with a slipstitch in any sc of round 5 of base.
Round 1: Ch 4, slipstitch in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, slipstitch in same st as starting ch, slipstitch in next st, repeat around. (12 petals)

Note: You may end up with 13 petals, that’s because it is easy to go into the slipstitch. Don’t worry, real flowers usually have an odd number of petals.

CENTER:
Ch 2
Round 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. DO NOT join, but work in continuous rounds. [6 sc]
Round 2: 2 sc in each st. [12 sc]
Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * around. [18 sc]
Round 4: Sc in each st. [18 sc]
Round 5: Sc in first st, sc dec over next 2 st. Repeat around. [12 sc]
Round 6: Sc dec over next 2 st. Repeat around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. [6 sc]

FINISHING:
Insert bottle cap in base. Stuff the bottle cap with Polyfil. Easy way to do this is to roll the Polyfil onto a ball between the palms of your hands. Stuff the flower center with Polyfil. The center should be firm but not hard. Put a line of hot glue around the rim of the bottle cap and on the base of the petals. Quickly press the flower center in place and hold firmly until the glue has cooled. If there are any gaps between the petals and the center, put a little hot glue on a toothpick and reglue the petals and center.

To make a wrist pin cushion cut a strip of elastic to fit comfortably around wrist. Overlap ends by ½ inch and sew. Either sew or hot glue pincushion to elastic.

To make a magnetic pincushion glue a round flat magnet to the bottom of the base. Be careful where you place the magnet as some surfaces are sensitive to magnets, like computerized sewing machines.
