Many thanks go to Virginia in WA for testing this pattern.

09/09/12 pattern edited to correct count at end of rounds.

SIZES:  Baby 12-14

Worsted weight yarn approximately 1.25 ounces
US size 10 (6 mm) 16 inch circular knitting needle
US size 10 (6 mm) double point needles
Tapestry needle

  1. Read instructions through before beginning.
  2. Use size 9 (5.5) needles for the light weight worsted yarn, like Pound of Love, Simply Soft and Caron Jumbo Prints.
  3. The cap in photo was knit with Caron Wintuk.

With 16 inch needle, cast on 48 sts. Join and work in the round.

Place marker to designate beginning of round.

Round 1:  *K2, P2.   Repeat from * to marker.  (48 sts)

Repeat round 1 until cap measures 3 inches from cast on edge.

Rounds 2-3: *K6, P2.  Repeat from * around to marker.  (48 sts)

Rounds 4-5: K.  (48 sts)

Rounds 6-7: K2, *P2, K6.  Repeat from * to last 6 sts, P2, K4. (48 sts)

Rounds 8-9: K.  (48 sts)

Repeat rounds 2-9 twice, cap should measure about 7 inches from cast on edge.

Begin decreases:  Switch to double points when necessary.

Dec Round 1:  *K2, K2tog, K2, P2.  Repeat from * around.  (42 sts)

Dec Round 2:  *K5, P2.  Repeat from * around.  (42 sts)

This is where I switch to double points.

Dec Round 3:  *K3, K2tog, K2.   Repeat from * around.  (36 sts)

Dec Round 4:  K.  (36 sts)

Dec Round 5:  *K2tog, P2, K2.  Repeat from * around.  (30 sts)

Dec Round 6:  *K1, P2tog, K2.  Repeat from * around.  (24 sts)

Dec Round 7:  *K2, K2tog.  Repeat from * around.  (18 sts)

Dec Round 8:  *K1, K2tog.  Repeat from * around.  (12 sts)

Dec Round 9:  *K2tog.  Repeat from * around.  (6 sts)

Cut yarn, weave end through remaining 6 sts. Draw tight and weave in end.

Cute hat, but why do the stitches jump up to 80? You only cast on 48.
You're correct my error. I will update now.
great !
greetings from Poland
Thank you for the pattern, made it yesterday for my grand daughter! Do you have a cardigan sweater to match it?
Sorry I do not have a matching sweater.
Hi Susie, great little hat. Would you have this pattern for flat knitting?
Since I don't like sewing a seam and weaving in more ends than necessary...NOPE no patterns for knitting flat and seaming on this blog.
