LONGIES 9 MONTH

This pattern is for the 9 month size.

MATERIALS:
About 5 ounces (300 yards) worsted weight yarn (yarn in photo is my hand dyed wool)
Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
Size H (5.0 mm ) crochet hook
Marker
Tapestry needle
½ inch elastic 18 inches for 9 month size
½ inch grosgrain ribbon 18 inches (optional)
Small amount of thread and sewing needle



GAUGE: 8 sc = 2 inches, 8 rows = 2 inches


SPECIAL STITCHES:

Dc Foundation stitch =
Ch 3 (doesn’t count as a dc), yarn over, insert hook in first ch and *pull up a loop. Yarn over, and pull through one loop (chain). Yarn over and pull through two loops twice (dc). You now have one foundation stitch. Yarn over and insert hook in ch of stitch just made. Repeat from * until you have desired number of stitches.

Scdec = Worked over 2 stitches, insert hook in next st, draw up a loop, (two loops on hook), insert hook in next st, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), YO and draw through all 3 lps.

Fphdc = Front post hdc, YO, insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post (upright part) of st, YO and draw yarn through, YO and complete hdc.

Bphdc = Back post hdc, YO, reaching over top of piece and working on opposite side (right side) of work, insert hook from right to left around vertical post of next st, YO and draw yarn through, YO and complete hdc.

NOTES:
1. Read instructions all the way through before beginning.
2. Diaper cover in photo crocheted with Lion Brand Pound of Love Lavender.
3. When joining with a slipstitch pull the slipstitch tight.
4. To make the waistband adjustable, cut the elastic 2 inches shorter and sew about 8 inches of twill tape or ribbon to each end. Then crochet over the elastic, but leave the tape or ribbon ends loose at about the 40th and 42nd stitch. Then you can tie the ends in a bow.

INSTRUCTIONS 9 MONTHS:

Before beginning prepare the 18 inch elastic by over lapping the ends by ½ inch and sewing securely. Or use the adjustable waistband instructions above at note 4.

WAISTBAND:
Round 1:
Crochet a 68 st dc foundation row. Skip the chains and join with a slipstitch in first true dc. Pull the slipstitch tight. (68 sts)

Round 2: Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a dc), dc in join and each st around. Join with a slipstitch in first dc. Pull the slipstitch tight. (68 sts)





Round 3: Drop the loop from your hook, hold the elastic against your first dc row. Fold the bottom dc row around the elastic. Insert your hook through the loop that is in front of your joining loop from the previous round, pick up the dropped loop and pull it through. Ch 1, sc through both layers matching the loops around, enclosing the elastic Join wiith a slipstitch in first sc. Pull the slipstitch tight.


Round 4: Ch 1, *Sc in next 7sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * 3 times.. DO NOT join. Place marker. (76 sts)

Rounds 5-19: Sc in each st around. DO NOT join, work continuous rounds. Move up marker each round. (76 sts)

Should measure about 4.75 inches.

CROTCH: (worked in rows)

Row 20: Sc in 22 sts. Ch 1, turn. (22 sts)

Row 21: Sc in 22 sts. Remove marker. Ch 1, turn. (22 sts)

Row 22: Sc in first st, scdec. *Sc in 7 sts, scdec. Repeat from * once. Sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (19 sts)

Row 23: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (19 sts)

Row 24: Sc in 1 st, *scdec, sc in 2 sts. Repeat from * twice. Scdec, sc in 1 st, scdec, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (14 sts)

Row 25: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (14 sts)

Row 26: Sc in 1 st, scdec, sc in 8 sts, scdec, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (12 sts)

Row 27: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (12 sts)

Row 28: Sc in 1 st, scdec, sc in 6 sts, scdec, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)

Row 29: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)

Row 30: Sc in 1 st, scdec, sc in 4 sts, scdec, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (8 sts)

Row 31-35: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (8 sts)

Row 36: Sc in first st, 2 sc in next st. Sc in 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)

Row 37: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)

JOIN BACK TO FRONT:
You are now going to match the row you just finished to round 19, skip 22 sts. Match up crotch to the next 10 sts and slipstitch through both layers to the end of the row. (10 slipstitches)

DO NOT fasten off.

Should measure about 7 inches.

RIGHT LEG:
Round L1:
Ch 1, work 17 sc in the side of crotch sts. Scdec in the st where the crotch sts end and the first sc of body. (If there is a slight hole at the junction of the crotch and body don’t worry about it, you can close it when you weave in the ends.) Sc in next 21 sts, scdec in st where the crotch st starts and the slipstitch row. DO NOT join, place marker. (40 sts)

Round L2: Sc in each st around. Move up marker.(40 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 2.5 inches from Round L1. (40 sts)

Round L3: *Scdec, sc in 8 sts. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, move marker. (36 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 4 inches from Round L1. (36 sts)

Round L4: *Scdec, sc in 7 sts. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, move marker. (32 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 5.5 inches from Round L1. (32 sts)

Round L5: *Scdec, sc in 6 sts. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, move marker. (28 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 7.5 inches from Round L1. (28 sts)

CUFF: (worked in rounds with joins)

Switch to H (5.0 mm) hook.

Round C1: Slipstitch in next st. Pull slipstitch tight. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch around ch 2 as if to fphdc. (28 hdc)

Round C2-4: Ch 2 (counts as first fphdc), *bphdc around next st, fphdc around next st. Repeat from * around. Ending with a bphdc around last st. Join with a slipstitch around ch 2 as if to fphdc. (28 sts)

Fasten off.

LEFT LEG:

Round L1: Attach yarn with a sc in the slipstitch row at the front. Scdec in the sts where the crotch sts end and the first sc of body. (If there is a slight hole at the junction of the crotch and body don’t worry about it, you can close it when you weave in the ends.) Sc in next 20 sts, scdec in next st and st where the crotch sts start. Work 17 sc in the side of crotch sts. DO NOT join, place marker. (40 sts)

Round L2: Sc in each st around. Move up marker.(40 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 2.5 inches from Round L1. (40 sts)

Round L3: *Scdec, sc in 8 sts. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, move marker. (36 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 4 inches from Round L1. (36 sts)

Round L4: *Scdec, sc in 7 sts. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, move marker. (32 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 5.5 inches from Round L1. (32 sts)

Round L5: *Scdec, sc in 6 sts. Repeat from * around. DO NOT join, move marker. (28 sts)

Repeat Round L2 until leg measures 7.5 inches from Round L1. (28 sts)


CUFF: (worked in rounds with joins)

Switch to H (5.0 mm) hook.

Round C1: Slipstitch in next st. Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch around ch 2 as if to fphdc. (28 hdc)

Round C2-4: Ch 2 (counts as first fphdc), *bphdc around next st, fphdc around next st. Repeat from * around. Ending with a bphdc around last st. Join with a slipstitch around ch 2 as if to fphdc. (28 sts)

Fasten off.

Weave ends in using the tapestry needle.

Check to be sure the ties (if you used them) are at the center front. If not adjust them as necessary.
