BASKET WEAVE CAP
BASKET WEAVE CAP
MATERIALS:
Bulky weight yarn (5) approximately 3 ounces
K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle
GAUGE: 5 hdc = 2 inches
SIZES: Medium 19 (Large 21) inches
NOTES:
- Read through all instructions before beginning.
- Cap in photo was crocheted using JoAnn Sensations Rainbow Classic (aqua).
- Flower instructions are 6 Petal Flower.
SPECIAL STITCHES:
Hdc = half double crochet
Fbhdc = Front post Half double crochet
Bphdc = Back post half double crochet
INSTRUCTIONS:
Round 1: Ch 3, (do not count as first dc) 9 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook. Join with a slipstitch in first hdc. (9 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st. Join with a slipstitch in first hdc. (18 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, *hdc in 1 st, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch in first hdc. (27 sts)
Round 4: Ch 2, *hdc in 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch in first hdc. (36 sts)
Round 5: Ch 2, *hdc in 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch around the first hdc as if to front post. (45 sts)
Round 6 Medium only: Ch 2, *hdc in 14 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch around the first hdc as if to front post. (48 sts)
Round 6 Large only: Ch 2, *hdc in 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch around the first hdc as if to front post. (54 sts)
Rounds 7-8: Ch 2 (counts as the first fphdc), fphdc around next 2 sts, bphdc around next 3 sts. *Fphdc around next 3 sts, bphdc around next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch around the ch 2. (48, 54 sts)
Rounds 9-10: Ch 2 (counts as the first bphdc), bphdc around next 2 sts, fphdc around next 3 sts. *Bphdc around next 3 sts, fphdc around next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. Join with a slipstitch around the ch 2. (48, 54 sts)
Repeat rounds 7-10 once.
Repeat rounds 7 and 8 once more.
Cuff:
Rounds 1-3: Ch 1, sc in each st. Join with slipstitch in first sc. (48, 54 sts)
Fasten off, weave in ends.

I love this cap! For some reason I cannot get the pattern to work for me, when I start the basket weave. I wind up with an extra stitch in the back. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. I am careful and I do count the stitches but the 48 stitches for the medium does not work for me. HELP! Thanks, Mary
My guess is you are working into a joining stitch. Be sure when you slip stitch you pull the slip stitch so tight it nearly disappears. That way you won't work into or around it.
