JUNE - GO GREEN MARKET BAG

GO GREEN MARKET BAG

Paper or plastic? The answer is neither, GO GREEN by crocheting a reusable market bag. Would also make a great beach bag. What other uses can you think of? Instructions are included for over the shoulder straps, or a shorter version for over the arm.

NOTES:
1.
Read instructions all the way through before beginning.
2. Treble Crochet V stitch = treble, chain 1, treble (tr, ch 1, tr)
3. When working the joining slipstitch pull the stitch tight. That way you won’t be tempted to work into it next time around.
4. If your gauge is larger than stated, 5 ounces may not be enough to finish bag. So make your first one out of a 7 ounce skein.
5. Be sure to change to the H hook for working rounds 16-21, this gives your bag a stable top.
6. You can make the Go Green Market Bag without the CD, it will be less structured if you choose to leave it out.

Comments:
I love this bag! I try to remember my cloth bags when I go to the store, but often leave them in the car during the struggle of getting my two year old out of the car seat and into the cart or stroller. I could fit several of these in my purse and have them with me at all times though, and that's just perfect! Now all I have to do is find time to make them - without the help of above mentioned two year old.

I love to make string bags, and I never thought to use a cd in the bottom! What an unique idea! Thanks for sharing your pattern! I will plan to work one up soon :)

Thanks for sharing these directions! I've made hotpads out of the CDs before but this idea is fabulous. Guess what all the special people on my Christmas list will be getting?

Awesome pattern and FAB idea on the base. Love this so much, I plan to make recyling bags out of them too! Thanks so much for sharing.

I wanted to let you know how popular your bag is! I did get one made (despite the help of my two year old, LOL!) and took it to the grocery store Friday. The checker and sacker both loved it, and it holds more than any of the other bags I have too. Another gal who works at the store also does crafts and crochets and she loved it so much I printed off another copy of your fabulous pattern to give to her next time I go grocery shopping. I'll be making more of these for myself and to give to family members too.

Thanks Janelle and everyone else who has siad they like the GGMB. I'm tickled pink it is so popular.

Hi Suzie: I just wanted to stop by & thank you for yet another wonderful pattern...I just finished making your V-stitched market bag & it came out great. I'll be posting pictures on my Ravelry account (karend325) if you'd like to see. Thanks again!

I love this bag. I have made one with each length of handle. trying one out of cotton. love the rainbow one. would share pics but kids did something with batteries for camera.

kathy.

I love this bag- I've already made one out of worsted weight cotton (one of those huge spools) and a CD that came in a kid's meal...now I have at enough supplies to make at least 4 more so I can carry them for shopping.
Thanks for a great idea!

Love the bag !
thanks for posting your directions.
I have made up a few by just messing around myself...
I love your choice of colors !
Keep 'em coming .

I love this pattern. It takes about 3 1/2 hours to make up. I have taught 2 of my daughters friends how to crochet using this pattern.

Also, I have fit 6 2liter sodas,an 8lb bag of chicken and other stuff in the spaces btwn the neck of the soda bottles.

I prefer the long handles.

I *love* this!
I'm making this for a Crochetville swap partner!

Thanks for an easy and earth-friendly idea!

Love this pattern...its working up so quickly and easily! My 8 year old niece runs a "go green" based website and blog...I'm making some for her to give away!

Hi Suzie! I just made your green market bag and it turned out great! Your instructions were right on and I never had a single problem figuring out the pattern. I made it with some left over ivory for I was afraid the pattern might be off as so many are off of the web. I'm so disappointed I didn't use my favorite variegated from the beginning. No worries - I'm going to make it now! Thank you for taking the time to document this pattern so well and for SHARING it with all of us!!!!

Thank you, I try not to have any errors in my patterns. Some of them a tester has tested before I post them. I appreciate my testers more than I can ever say.

If there are any errors or ambiguities I appreciate people letting me know so I can fix them.

Thanks for posting your pattern--this bag is so cute. I love the rainbow-colored bag!

That is Red Heart Super Saver in Mexicana. I love the way that yarn made up.

I love this bag. What yarn did you use for the rainbow bag. I want to make one just like it!! Thanks for posting this.

The bag pictured was made with RHSS Mexicana. I love the the way it worked up.

I love this bag. I've already made one with cotton and I'm making another one. I was inspired by the rainbow and made one in my own rainbow colors. thanks for posting!

Love this! I like how the straps don't look too long like most of the other bag patterns I've been seeing.

Thank you so much for this awesome free pattern. my dh does all of the grocery shopping so I am making him a bunch of these bags. he wants me to make them twice as tall. i am just glad that he likes it. these bags will help me reduce the size of my stash that has gotten out of control.

Thanks for the darling and easy-to-make pattern. :) My earth-friendly, 11-year-old daughter found the pattern; I made it for her and she loves it! She showed it to her grandma and grandma loves it as well! I love it too and when I get some extra time I'm going to make one for myself and one for grandma. I like the idea of using the CD in the bottom. It recycles the scratched, old CDs we don't use anymore. I am also going to try making one out of Peaches 'n' Cream yarn to take to the beach/swimming pool.

Thanks Suzie I just love your blog and have become a follower. The bag pattern is going to be a real treat to work on in the evenings and will help me use up all my extra yarn bits.

Susie, I would just like to tell you how much I have truly enjoyed making this bag. I have made four of them, going to give one to each of my daughters for Christmas. Thank you once again. From Canada

I just finished this bag! LOOOVED ur idea...going to visit family this weekend and i made one to take for my cousin for a B-Day gift! Im just new to crocheting and knitting ang totally addicted and i will follow ur site for more beginner- friendly ideas!! Thanks again....Central-Alberta Canada!!

The instructions given make the rainbow bag. However the green bag appears to have more rows of sc between the inner handles. Do you have instructions for that?? Thank you! (P.S. made this bag and giving it to a well-known UK star tomorrow!)

They are made the same, I think it is just the camera angle that makes it appear different.

I got it! It was just the sides were shown in the front in one photo. Thanks! And the celebrity loved it!

I made this out of some Lion Cotton and had to adjust my hook size for gauge. It worked up great and, as with all of Suzie's patterns, it looked just like the picture! I didn't have a CD to use for the base but I wanted some structure there so I substituted a double thickness of plastic canvas in the base. It isn't quite as firm as the CD would have been but it is pretty close. Thanks again for your generosity, Suzie and keep up the good work!

Suzetta awesome friend and pattern writer, how long does this bag take you to make? It took me about 25 minutes to make your beanie for men and women...I am just trying to gauge how long this might take me to make (smile)

Hey Suzetta fellow friend and pattern writer! How long does it take you to make this bag? I am trying to gauge how long it will take me to make it. It takes me about 20 minutes to make your beanie for men/women. THANKS! Oh, I need to totally take a pic of the backpack I made for my little guy, SO cute!

The beanie takes me longer than 25 minutes, your hook must be in high gear.

It uses about twice as much yarn, so twice as long as the beanie?

I LOVE this pattern! Thank you so much for posting it! Saw it on Pinterest, and I've already made 2 since last night! And Is see many more in my future!
Penny

Pleases me that you are happily making bags.

Ok so I just finished this bag and I have to say I love the pattern. I'm not the greatest at crocheting but I managed to make it but for those over ambitious folks out there let me say a few things. Do NOT try to make it bigger. I am totally a 'bigger is better' person. I like long straps on bags and when I did the rows for the body of the bag I thought 'but but but I want it bigger' so I did two extra rows. Then I started the straps and I thought 'but I like to sling a bag over my shoulders' now I can't put anything heavy in it LOL you have to strongly consider how much the cotton will stretch. I think I will avoid putting heavy goods in this bag but I just bought yarn for three more and I will make them with this pattern exactly as it was posted. They will be perfect. Thanks so much!

This pattern is just what I was looking for - so I have included a link to it in my blog - http://alittlebirdmademe.com/2013/08/09/friday-finds-a-list-of-21-links-to-free-patterns-for-crochet-market-bags/.
Feel free to stop by and grab a button to show that you have been featured.

I loved the look and simplicity of this bag. I gave it to a friend who is anxious or her farmers' market to start this Spring - that is if Spring ever arrives in the midwest. Thanks for a great pattern. Now to make couple for myself.

Love this bag! Thank you so much for sharing! What brand and color yarn did you use for the rainbow? Love it!,,

The bag in the photo is Red Heart Super Saver Mexicana.

I'm confused what is CD??

The round thing you upload or download with your computer.

Or if you are behind the times like me listen to audiobooks on with a CD player.

What yarn did you use to get the rainbow color bag. It is awesome!!! I want to get the right colors and I love bright! Please let me know, if possible.

That bag was crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver Mexicana.

Thanks for the reply, and so quickly! I must find the yarn and make it. Love, love it!

The first one I made I used Sunrise Red Heart. Then last night I made a rainbow Easter Basket for my grandson and put a 42 year old purple bunny (tradition) in his basket. He loved it! Then this afternoon I made another one of these bags with Lily Sugar and Cream. It was harder to do it in cotton, it seems, but it sure does look nice! It's not as stretchy neither. Awesome and simple pattern.

I want the pattern for the multi color bag. Please

There is only one pattern, The multicolor one is crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver Mexicana.

Hi Suzetta, Well I am up to the sc rows, my count is ten rows of trebles, now I have 2 rows of sc. I stopped because I thought it should be taller, it looks so short, but yours is 10!rows of trebles too. Someone else said not to play with the patter to add a few more rows, what do you think? I also made it with Red Heart Super Saver, I know cotton is better, but more expensive! I want to make over 20 for the nurses and Doctors at dialysis! I crochet them a present every Christmas to say Thank you for saving my life! Any suggestions on making the bag a few rows taller and is there any cotton that is a little cheaper or in bulk? Happy to gave found you! I enjoy your designs!
💛💚💜💙❤️🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄 Ricki Lieberman

How do you join your blog or group! I want to see your patterns and any new designs you put out! I enjoy your work!
💛💚💜💙❤️😋 Ricki Lieberman

If you think it needs to be deeper, I say go for it. Perhaps your trebles are a little shorter than mine. Do know that the bag stretches a lot.

As far as cheaper cotton the cones from Wal-Mart are more reasonably priced than any place I know of.

Near the top on the right hand side there is a place to enter an email and join. It is a Yahoo Group so you do need a Yahoo email address, but can receive the posts at another email.

I am on my 3rd bag. Pretty easy; however, on round 5 I am only getting 55 stitches, not the 60.

I love this bag, but it would be great if you would put in total yardage amount of finished item as well as all of your patterns

I don’t know what CD for the base is. Sorry

Compact disc
