This crocheted and felted roll brim hat can be worn three ways: Roll Brim, Snap Brim or a Bucket.

MATERIALS:
100% Worsted Weight Feltable Wool Approximately 5.25 ounces
Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook

MEASUREMENTS:
Before felting: Height 14 inches, Width at brim 18 inches
After felting: Height 8 inches, Width at brim (turned down 10 inches

INSTRUCTIONS:
Round 1: Ch 2, 12 hdc into second stitch from hook. Join. (12 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 1, *2 hdc in next st repeat from * around. Join. (24 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 1, *hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (32)

Round 4: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (40 hdc)

Round 5: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 4 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (48 hdc)

Round 6: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 5 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (56 hdc)

Round 7: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 6 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (64 hdc

Round 8: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 7 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (72 hdc)

Round 9: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 8 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (80 hdc)

Rounds 12 to 27: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join. (96 hdc)

Note: To make a crocheted in “band” crochet rounds 24-26 in contrasting yarn.

Round 28: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 7 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (108 hdc)

Rounds 29 to 32: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join.

Round 33: Ch 1, *1 hdc in next 8 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join. (120 hdc)

Rounds 34 to 37: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each stitch around. Join. Finish off


FELTING/FULLING THE HAT:
Put the crocheted hat into a zippered pillow case. This is necessary to protect the pump in your washing machine.

Put the bag and a couple pair of old jeans into the washing machine on “hot” cycle, small load, fastest agitation. Add a very small amount of liquid dish washing soap (not dishwasher soap).

Let the machine agitate the hat for 10 minutes. Stop the machine and check the progress of the hat. If it’s still too big, reset to the beginning of the wash cycle. Recheck it every 5 mInutes as it can felt in a hurry at this stage. Don’t let the washer spin. It takes 16 minutes in my washer. But times vary by machine and water temperature.

Remove the hat from the machine and rinse the soap out in a sink. Squeeze as much water out as possible without wringing. Then wrap in a towel to absorb excess water. Then shape it as you desire. You can use a bowl a mannequin head or your own head. Don’t laugh the first one I made that’s what I did. Now I have the perfect flower pot. Allow the hat to air dry. Trim any loose ends.
