So lovely I can't decide which I like best, I will have to make one of each, thank you so much for the patterns :)
I loved the ease of this pattern. I admit I did change it a tad. I have a friend who has breast cancer and is going through Chemo. She said her head gets so cold. I made a few hats for her as her birthday was Sunday. I started with brown Caron Simply Soft and crocheted the crown, then I dc in the back chain. I then went back with beige and made the shells in the front loops. I then added the band sc around. It is nice and warm. I plan to make the scarflet to go with it as well as a pair of wristlets. Thank you for the pattern.
I love this hat. I need clarification for round 9-15 please. I got up to that part and the shells do not line up after. I am going to pull all my stitches and try again.
I'm confused when it comes to instructions for round 9. I joined with a slip stitch at end of round 8. I counted 16 shells not 14. I will go adjust that first.
In round 9 it says to slip stitch in the next stitch. So that's two slip stitches in a row? It then says to slip stitch again into the chain 1 space? Is that also where I start my chain 3 for the next shell?
Please help.

Work the slip stitches exactly where and the number of times as written.
Since you ended up with 16 shells, it sounds like you are working into stitches that should be skipped. Go back to where your count is correct and continue from there. Pay close attention to where you are instructed to skip stitches.
Good luck.

I think at row 8 you should skip 3 and shell. That way you end up with 14 shells and all 42 sc of the previous row are used up. Please, let me know if this makes any sense to you. Thank You.
I made both the cap and the scarflette for my niece it was the hit of the party thank you for sharing!
This is a cute hat, but so small! I thought it was for an adult, but I can hardly fit it over my head (I don't think my head is very big!) I know I did the pattern right, 14 shells all the way around. Just very small.
It is an adult cap. If yours turned out too small it could be the yarn you used was thinner than what I used or you work tighter than others. You could try again with a larger hook.
In 9-15, I am not understanding what to do where it instruction Shell in next ch 1 space. Please help
Round 8: Ch 3, dc in same st, ch 1, 2 dc in same st. *skip 2 sts, 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc (shell) in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch in top of beginning ch 3. (14 shells)
Atthe end of Round 7 I have 42 stitches. I pretty sure i followed directions correctly for Round 8 ( *2 dc in a st, ch 1, 2 dc in next stitch, skip 2 sts,* repeat) and I kep ending up having only 10 shells. Not sure what else to do?

I don't know why you have a problem. My guess is some where you skipped extra stitches.
42/3 = 14 shells
Be sure your first shell is worked in the stitch where you joined the previous round.

Are you slip stitching in to the top off the 3ch start then slip stitch into 1st DC then into the 1ch gap where you will start the next shell pattern of 3ch,1dc,1ch,2dc all in that 1ch space.
In round 8, it should say same stitch not next stitch. Because I ended up with 11 shells and realized it was worded wrong. Love the hat! Just finished it with the bottom in a blo stitch.
I don't, but you could skip round 7 and go to round 8. That would make 12 shells and would turn out smaller.
