  3. If you crochet loosely use a smaller hook.

Hdc = half double crochet
Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together a decrease
St = stitch

Ch 2

Round 1:  Working over the beginning tail, 6 sc in second ch from hook.

Do not join.

Round 2: Sc in back loop of each sts.

Note: the head is worked from the inside.

Round 3: *Sc in back loop of next st, 2 sc in next st.  Repeat from * twice.  (9 sts)

Round 4-5: Sc in back loop of next sc. (9 sts)

Optional:  Put a very small amount of polyfil in head before finishing the sc2tog round.

Round 6: Sc2tog in back loop of next 2 sc, repeat 4 times.

Ch 40.  Slip stitch in 2nd ch from hook and next 3 chs.  Sc in 15 chs, hdc in each ch to the last 3 chs.  Sc in last 3 chs..  Fasten off leaving about a 6 inch tail.

Use the yarn tail to sew the tail evenly to the head and reinforce the neck.

Weave the end of the beginning tail through the round 1 single crochets.  Pull beginning tail tight to close the nose.

Choose the best looking side of the head and pull a piece of red yarn through the nose near the bottom of head and tie in a tight knot for the tongue.  Run one end of yarn back inside head so that only one tail is showing for tongue.  Cut about 1/2 inch long.

Glue wiggle eyes on round 3, leaving one sc free between the eyes.  (see photo for placement)

Now little boys would love that bookmarker!

Sure hope they like them. I'm making them for the K-5 school near my house. I don't have kids, but do what I can to encourage reading.
