GIRLS PINAFORE

GIRLS PINAFORE

Many thinks to Virginia J. for testing this pattern.

SIZE:  Measured across yoke at armhole stitches, you can see this little pinafore will fit a large range of sizes.
Caron One Pound (US 11 [8.0 mm] needle) 28 inches
Red Heart Super Saver (US 10 [6.0 mm] needle) about 24 inches
Pound of Love about (US (10 [6.0 mm] needle) 22 inches

MATERIALS:
Your choice of yarn and circular needle, see notes.
Button (3/4 inch)
Ribbon 5/8 inch 1 to 1 ½ yards
US 10 (6.0 mm) 24 inch circular knitting needle
US I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
4 Markers
Tapestry needle

GAUGE:  In garter stitch
Red Heart Super Saver 7 sts=2 inches
Pound of Love 8 sts=2 inches

NOTES:
1.  Read instructions completely through before beginning

2.  Different yarns and needles will make different sizes.  The pattern is the same for all the sizes.  The amount of yarn required will depend upon how long you make the garment.  The ones in the photos are 11 repeats of the skirt pattern.   The ounces listed should give you a rough idea of how much yarn you will need.

The Persimmon Is Caron One Pound and it weighs 6.9 ounces and was knit with a US size 11 (8.0 mm) 24 inch circular needle.  It measures 28 inches at the underarm.

The Pink one is Lion Brand Pound of Love and weighs 3.6 ounces and was knit with a US size 10 (6.0 mm) 24 inch circular needle.  It measure 22 inches at the underarm.

  1.  Because the garter stitch yoke is stretchy this little pinafore will fit many sizes.  The lucky girl will be able to wear it for quite awhile.  There is a nice chart of children’s measurements here:

  1. Rows and rounds start at center back.
  2. You decide the length:  top, pinafore or dress.
  3. If you want to use a larger button, just make the chain button loop longer.
  4. I always tack the center of the ribbon at the center back, so even if the bow comes untied it won’t come out of the pinafore.

ABBREVIATIONS:
K = Knit
P = Purl
YO = Yarn over
PM = Place marker
K2tog = Knit 2 together
PU = Pick up and knit
Kfb = Knit in front and back

SPECIAL STITCHES:
Pickup and knit = PU

K2tog = Knit 2 together a decrease

Picot bind off

Inc = KFB, Knit into front and back of stitch

YOKE
Cast on 40 stitches, leaving about a 9 inch tail.  More about this tail at the end of the pattern.

Row 1: K across. (40 sts)

Row 2:  K5, PM, K10, PM, K10, PM, K10, PM, K5.  (40 sts)

Rows 3-17:  K across inc 1 st before and after each marker.  (160 sts)

For the armhole bind off you can bind off plain or fancy it up with the picot bind off.  If you use the picot bind off, bind off two stitches before casting on the first two stitches for the picot bind off.

Row 18:   K20 (to first marker). Bind off 40 sts.  K40 (to marker 3).  Bind off 40 sts.  K20.  (80 sts)

Do not turn.  From now on you will be working in rounds, but we will keep the same row/round sequence.

Picking up one stitch in the first bound off sleeve stitch makes a smoother transition from skirt to sleeve.

Round 19:  K 20 sts, PU (pickup and knit) a st in the first bound off st, cast on 3 sts, K40 sts, PU a st in the first bound off st, cast on 3, K20.  PM (88 sts)

Round 20-21:  K around. (88 sts)

Round 22:  (Eyelet round)  K2, YO, K2tog.  Repeat around.  (88 sts)

Rounds 23-24:  K around. (88 sts)

SKIRT:

Note:  There are no increases in the 4 underarm sts.  The different colors on this round don’t mean anything, just a tool for me to keep track of which part I’m working.

Round 25:  (K1, inc Kfb in next 4 sts) 3 times.  (K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1).  K4.  (K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1).  (K1, inc Kfb in next 4 sts) 6 times.  (K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1).  K4.  (K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1, inc Kfb in 1 st, K1).  (K1, inc Kfb in next 4 sts) 3 times.  (144 sts)

Round 26:  K2tog 3 times. *(YO, K1) 6 times. K2tog 6 times.  Repeat from * to last 12 stitches.  (YO, K1) 6 times.  K2tog 3 times.  (144 sts)

Round 27:  P. (144 sts)

Round  28:   K. (144 sts)

Round 29:  K. (144 sts)

Repeat rounds 26-29 until skirt is about 1/2 inch less than you want.

Repeat rounds 26-28  once.

Bind off in knit.

Fasten off and weave in ending tail.

BUTTON LOOP
With your crochet hook, put hook through cast on row and pull up a loop using the beginning tail.  Chain 6.  Test to be sure your button will fit through loop.  Fasten off and weave end into row 1 or 2.

Sew on button.

Weave ribbon in and out eyelet round and tie in a bow.

    You have some nice patterns that I'd like to try. I don't mind copy-and-paste, but not line-by-line as is required on your site.

    Some patterns might even be worth purchasing but if I can't try out patterns because they're too much work to copy I won't be interested. There must be another way to set-up your site so people can try your patterns, others have made it possible to with similar sites.

  3. I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with copy/paste. You shouldn't need to do it line by line. Perhaps you can ask someone to show you how to use a different method. If not then use a site you find easier.

    Can you tell me what sizes the ones are in the pictures? I am having a hard time gauging what size needle to start with.

  7. When you do the increases before and after the markers on the yoke, are you kfb? Or make one?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I did kfb, but you can do whatever you prefer.

  9. Row 25. What do you mean on the kfb when it says (in 1 st)? Does that just mean you do it with that stich or is there something I am missing.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It means knit in front and back of a stitch. It is an increase.

  11. Round 25-(k1, inc kfb in next 4 stitches) 3 times. Does this mean you kfb in 12 stitches?

    Love the dress but can’t understand this instruction. So I get this one: Row 2: K5, PM, K10, PM, K10, PM, K10, PM, K5. (40 sts)
    But this one I don’t:
    Rows 3-17: K across inc 1 st before and after each marker. (160 sts)

    Are we just knitting the 40 stitches on each row from row 3-17? How do we end up with 160 sts then? Bit confused there!

    ReplyDelete
  13. You are increasing 8 stitches on every row 3-17. So 40 + (8x15) = 160.

    Row 25
    I love this pattern but I am stuck on this row.

    I don't understand this part.
    (K1, inc kfb in next 4 sts) 3 times. Does this mean knit in front and back on every 4th st) 3 times?

  15. (K1, inc kfb in next 4 sts) 3 times.

    Sorry you don't understand.
