RIPPLE BASKET

I owe Virginia a huge thank you for testing this pattern.

SIZE: 7 inch diameter, 4 inch depth

GAUGE: 3 dc = 1 inch

MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn approximately 4 ounces

US Size G (4.5 mm) crochet hook

Tapestry needle

NOTES:

1. Read the pattern all the way through before beginning.

2. Worked with two strands and a G basket is fairly firm, the addition of a Cool Whip lid in the bottom stabilizes the shape. If you usually work tight, you may be able to use an H (5.0 mm) hook.

3. If you want a deeper basket repeat round 8.

SPECIAL STITCH:

Dc dec over 3 (decrease) = Yo and draw up a loop in next dc, yo and draw through 2 loops, skip next dc, yo and draw up a loop in next dc, yo and draw through 2 loops, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

  1. Suzie, have you tried to make this larger?? I am wondering what would happen if it was doubled? I am looking for a large basket to make. I love the looks of this one.

  2. I think it would be difficult to crochet it tight enough to make the sides rigid enough on a larger size.

I think this basket would work with plastic yarn, and because of the stifness of the plarn, you might be able to increase it, what do you think Suzetta?

  4. I think the plastic strips should be cut a couple inches wide and worked as tightly as possible without breaking the strips.

In 2002 I made some bags and rugs with a strand of yarn carried along for strength. Also added some color.

What about using wool then felting it? I'm thinking that would make it a rigid enough to hold the shape.

  6. If using wool to felt use a larger hook.

    beautiful pattern, thanks, suzie.
i would like to make it bigger, to say abase of 20 cm or more, but am unsure of the incteasingf to make base larger before the sides start going straigfht up.
can you please advise me on how to do the pattern bigger, and then of course including one or two more waves.
i do not mind if some rigidity is lost.
i am using a twelve ply wool, and a hook size 5mm. it comes up quite specky so far!

  8. Just increase in the formula established until it is as large as you want the bottom.

    Dear suzie,

Thanks for so many beautiful patterns.

I am revisiting the meagre crochet skills I had years ago, and i find that
your patterns and ideas are just what I like most!

Have already done a few hats of yours, and they came up loverly!

I did post a comment on your ripple basket pattern page, but being not too
good on the computer am not sure whether you got it.

I live in Australia, so the wool sizes and hook sizes differ somewhat, but i
will try to explain what i am trying to do.

That beaut ripple basket will make a wonderful kufi hat upside down, and
that is exactly what i so much want to do.

However, the basket you say end up only 7 inches diameter, while i would
like it to be about 10 inches diameter to allow it to fit around a man’s
head. The hat does not fit like a beanie or cap, but has, like your basket,
a flat bottom ond sides coming down however deep one wants it to be, usually
    about5 or 6 inches.

I am unsure how to go about enlarging the base before the walls of the
hat/basket start . Could you please help me?

I am using a 12 ply nice thick wool, and a size5 mm hook, which makes the
pattern nice and tight and dense enough. The base so far, up to row 5,
looks and feels nice and dense and not floppy, and i am sure it the pattern
will continue that way. Even if the hat is not rigid like a basket, it does
not matter too much at all.

It would be really great if you could tell me how keep on increasing the
base and then how to incorporate another set of waves or two in order to end
up with a basket/kufi of about 10 inches in diameter.

    Thanks once again!

  10. 7 inches in diameter would make it about 21 inches in circumference.
You can try one more increase round like this.

Round 8: Ch 1, *sc in 2 sts, hdc in 3 sts, 3 dc in 1 st, hdc in 3 sts, sc in 3 sts. Repeat from * around. Join with slipstitch in first sc, DO NOT pull slipstitch tight. (84 sts)

I think that may be too large, but worth a try.

  11. End with dc dec over 3
Could you explain why we skip 1 dc in the dec over 3? I have always gone into the next 3 stitches for the dc dec over 3.
Beautiful Basket, i will be making one :-)

  12. We don't have to do things the way we always have. Working it my way makes a sharper point.
