BASIC KID'S BEANIE

This is the cap I have been making for the local Salvation Army.  I wasn’t going to post the pattern but several people have asked me to share the pattern I was using.

I want to thank Jo in NY for testing the pattern.

SIZE:  Kid’s 18-20 inches, depth about 7.5 inches

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn, approximately 2 ounces
H (5.0 mm) or I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
Tapestry needle

NOTES:
1.  Read instructions all the way through before beginning.
2.  Should fit children 3 to 12 years old.  For older children you can work a couple extra double crochet rounds to increase the depth.
3.  When joining with a slip stitch, pull the slip stitch tight.
4.  Do not count the ch 2 at beginning of rounds as a dc.
5.  Cap in photo was crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver and H hook.
6.  When I made some with Caron One Pound I used the I hook and only increased to 52 stitches.  To increase to 52 stitches work 2 dc in every 12th stitch on round 5.

ABBREVIATIONS:
Ch = chain
Dc = double crochet
Ea = each
St = stitch
Sts = stitches
Fpdc = front post double crochet
Bpdc = Back post double crochet

INSTRUCTIONS:

ROUND 1: Ch 3, working over tail, 12 dc in first ch.  Join with a slip stitch in first dc.  (12 sts)

ROUND 2:  Ch 2, 2 dc in ea st.  Join with a slip stitch in first dc. (24 sts)

ROUND 3:  Ch 2, dc in same st as join, 2 dc in next st.  *Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch in first dc.  (36 sts)

ROUND 4:  Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st.  *Dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch in first dc. (48 sts)

ROUND 5:
 Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in next 6 sts, 2 dc in next st.  *Dc in 7 sts, 2 dc in next st.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch in first dc.  (54 sts)

ROUND 6:
 Ch 2, dc in each st.  Join with a slip stitch in first dc.  (54 sts)

Repeat round 6 until cap measures at least 6.5 inches (center to edge).  On most of my caps this was 11 rounds.  On the last round slip stitch around first true dc as if to fpdc.

NEXT 2 ROUNDS:  Ch 2 (counts as first fpdc), *bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st.  Repeat from * around.  End with a slip stitch around ch 2 as if to fpdc.  (54 sts)

Fasten off.  Weave in end.

With the beginning tail and using your tapestry needle run tail through the beginning double crochets and pull tightly to close any hole in the top of the cap.

  1. Thanks for a great hat pattern. Do you also have an infinity scarf pattern that is easy and made in the round? I always enjoy your work and patterns. Blessings!

  3. I love the first note, read all instructions before beginning. I'm so guilty of not doing that one.
