PONYTAIL CAP

Thanks to Caterina for testing this pattern. She tested it about two years ago, not sure why I never got around to posting it.

SIZES: Child=16 inch {Youth=19 inch} [Adult=21 inch]

MATERIALS:
Worsted Weight yarn, approximately 2.5 ounces

H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
Small No Damage ponytail elastic, approximately 1.25 inch in diameter
Tapestry needle

NOTES:
1. Read instructions all the way though before beginning.
2. Ch 2 at beginning of round does NOT count as a dc.
3. Pull the joining slipstitches tight.
4. Don’t worry about the 18 sc not covering the hair elastic tightly. When you add the top knot it won’t show.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Round 1: 18 sc around elastic. Join in back loop of first sc with a slipstitch. (18 sts)

Round 2: Working in back loop only for this round, ch 2, 2 dc in same space as join. *Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with dc in last 2 sts. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join. *Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with dc in last st. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join. *Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with dc in last 2 sts. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (48 sts)

Round 5: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join. *Dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with dc in last 3 sts. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. (60 sts)

For child’s size skip to rounds 6-10, working on 60 stitches.

Round {6} Youth only: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join. *Dc in next 9 sts, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. End with dc in last 9 sts. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. {66}

Round [6] Adult only: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as join, (dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st) repeat around, join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. [72]

Rounds 6-10 {7-11} [7-11]: Ch 2, dc in same st as join, dc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first dc. 60 {66} [72]

CUFF:
Round 11 {12} [12]: Ch 1, sc in the front loop of each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. 60 {66} [72]

Rounds 12-14 {13-15} [13-16]:
Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a slipstitch in top of first sc. 60 {66} [72]

Optional edging:

Round 14 {15} [16]: Ch 1, reverse sc in each sc (be sure to skip the stitch made by the slip stitch). Do not join, you will have a nearly invisible join if you fasten off and weave in end.

Top Knot: Attach yarn in any unworked loop of round one. (Ch 10, slipstitch in same st) 3 times. *Slipstitch in next st, (Ch 10 slipstitch in same st) 3 times. Repeat from * around, having 3 chain 10 loops and 4 slipstitches in each stitch.

Cuff may be worn up or down.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful post of this pattern. This hat is a perfect mate to a corkscrew (like your top knot) scarf I made. I added a few extra rows to the hat so it could slouch a bit in the back making the hole lower for a lower worn ponytail. The extra rows were just slip stitches along the back bottom edge (about 12 on each side from the middle back) while gradually adding single crochet stitches to the side (10 on each side) and double crochet across the front (about 12 on each side of the middle across the front). You could add however many rows you want for the amount of slouch you want and taper as needed. I love the hat!! Chris

Sorry, forgot to add that I used just about the entire skein of Lion Brand Tweed Stripes (144 yards) for the hat I made adding some rows and taper for the hat to slouch in the back. Had a few yards left. Chris

  12. I'm having a hard time understanding where to start the knot. :( It says to attach in the "unworked loop of round 1" and I'm just not understanding where this is. Is it the loops around the ring or the posts of row one. (like a front post crochet stitch)? Help!

  13. Round 2 is only worked in the back loop of round 1. The Top Knot is worked in the remaining loop of round 2.

  14. to clarify, ONLY round 2 is crocheted in the back loop? If so, I need to do some ripping out, but then again it wouldn't be a project of mine if I didn't have to do some ripping out :) Thank you

  16. As a beginner, I can't figure out what I've done wrong! I have the correct amount of stitches on round 10. However, I just have a big floppy round - not a tapered cap. I don't think the brim will taper it enough and I don't want to continue crocheting if I've made a mistake. Help!

  17. If round 10 measures the size you need it is done right. If it is too large and you used worsted weight you need to use a small hook. The beginning rounds should be smaller that round 10 as you went from 18 stitches to 60, 66 or 72 stitches.

Made one for one of my daughters. Next thing I knew the requests were coming in. I ended up making 12 of them. Left them unwrapped on the table and let the ladies and girls choice what they wanted as they arrive for Christmas. A nice extra little gift.

Thank you for the pattern I am on my fourth one .For a little information the adult hat is a little big and I would suggest people to measure there head and ,depending on the type of yarn and how loose you crochet will depend on how big it will be too or small. Thank you again
